GOVERNOR YAHAYA BELLO:MOVING KOGI STATE TOWARDS ECONOMIC/SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Governance is all about serving and a constituted authority that provides enabling environment for citizens to achieve their goals and aspirations. Good governance is not about people who fill positions of power for the fun, but people who fulfilled their mandates as expected according to historical expectation. The restoration roadmap and the direction taken by Governor Yahaya Bello on assumption of office makes him upholds the principles of rule of law which is equality, supremacy, accountability, inclusive governance, and prudence in managing the resources for the development of Kogi State. The governor’s ability to institute a culture of merit in appointments of public office holders makes his administration to shun misuse of public resources. His administration in the last four years has been driven by values of good governance in all sphere.

The performance of the New direction government in education, health, agriculture, security, infrastructural, youth and women empowerment, after four years of daunting struggle sums up the audacious rebirth of Kogi state from the snares of misgovernance and financial embezzlement. In spite of outstanding challenges, the New direction government remains poised to forge ahead with determination to take kogi State to the next level. Governor Bello resolves to continue to explore all avenues, engage with all critical stakeholders, and work with the private sector to ensures consolidation of gains of the past four years. This administration would continue to expand opportunities for private sectors’ participations in boosting our economy in order to create more jobs and close the existing social inequality gap amongst our people.

The New direction government is bent on increasing and sustaining investment in agriculture, while consolidating the gains of the health sector, increasing investment in water, wider political inclusion and youths engagement, entrenching good governance political accountability, transparency and promoting greater public private collaboration and bequeathing secure and prosperous Kogi state. The government share the conviction that our long-term security and prosperity as a people depend solely on how much we invest to develop our agricultural sector. We are of the belief that agriculture has the potential and capacity not just to lift our people from poverty, but to also help strengthens our internal generated revenue (IGR)

Provision of more infrastructural facilities and potable water would also remain a top priority of Bellor’s second term, as he reaffirmed during his inaugural speech that: “Consolidating on the existing gains and building upon them to ensure that more communities have access to potable water remain his ultimate area of prioritization with the New direction team, as we hope to bequeath a Kogi State where the wellbeing of the people will not be measured by the presence of the rich, but by the absence of the poor amongst us. Governor Bello dream to revamp the state was not an impossible one, but it realization would depend solely on how sincere and dedicated we work in the next remaining years of this tenure which will be of benefit to all.

What is termed the dividend of democracy is nothing other than welfare of the people. This is not only the primary responsibility of any government but also an acid test with which government is measured everywhere. Bello transformational policies be it in education, youth empowerment,‎ agriculture,‎ health,‎ rural development,‎ security and other social infrastructure is unprecedented. The prompt payment of salaries to civil servants in the state despite the posity of fund and the drastic drop in federal allocation and state IGR which invariably could have affected the issue of salary payment is a plus. The government musters effort to continue the payment inspite this financial challenges that bedeviled the country at the moment and this effort must be commended.

The government is exploring more on micro- credit scheme in this second term, a system that has been used to empower many farmers and market women. Due to the success of this programme, more funds will be injected to incorporate more beneficiaries in this second term. The wisdom behind this cannot be over emphasized, therefore the best that can be done is for all Kogites to come together, since the governor’s appeal has always remains peaceful and enjoy the dividends of democracy through his new direction’s blue prints. The youths have always being beneficiaries of this government pursed with the desire vigour and enthusiasm. The government reiterated it commitment that every part of the state will receive attention as things improve but stresses the need for all to remain calm for peaceful coexistence and this has always be the vision and the passion the governor has exhibited so far in the interest of the state.

It’s crystal clear, the government is concentrating more on infrastructural facilities across the state. This is a deliberate attempt since the importance of good road network cannot be emphasized. Apart from ease of movement of persons, goods and services, communication will be enhanced needless to mention that farm produce from the interior can easily be transported to the urban areas thereby making the producers to have more value for their efforts. In the last four years every local government areas in Kogi state has received the governor’s attention in one form of development or the other and from all indications, the governor is poised to do more as the second term in his office continues. His policy thrust is premised on the notion that there is a very strong positive correlation between a state’s economic development and the quality of its road network.

To stem the tide, Governor Bello aim is his continuation to encourage economic activities across the state as well as to attract investors as part of his economic agenda. As a roadmap, the mission and goals of his administration can be summarized under the five-point agenda namely, job creation, poverty alleviation, wealth creation, economic and political inclusion; and infrastructural consolidation and expansion as it’s encapsulated in the new direction mantra. In line with his desire to turn things around, the governor quick to observe that good road network plays a crucial role in economic development of any state as it facilitates transport and movement of people, goods, and services from one area to another and succinctly put it another way, simply getting people connected is a great part of what economic growth is all about and this, the new direction government will uphold.

To this end, Governor Bello is touching every nook and cranny of the state as far as infrastructural development is concern. It’s believed this will speak for him in the days ahead. The massive contributions of Governor Bello’s to bring meaningful development to the grassroots cannot be overemphasized as both local and international organizations recognize his developmental strides. The Kogi state government under the leadership of His Excellency, will continue to as a government in bringing the needed infrastructure, because Kogi’s project will continue to be our top priority because it’s our duty to reposition Kogi state for the interest of our people.

Covid-19 And The Audacity Of Truth In Kogi State

By Dr Tom Ohikere

Today’s claim of Covid-19 virus in Kogi state which necessitated the lockdown order by the state government has shifted the emphasis from level of obligation imposed frequently requiring acceptance of what is not considered visible by the state government to a precautionary stands with the federal government.

This reorientation in any case should enhance deliberation and never to be understood as reduced to a choice but, on the contrary, a reciprocal exercise of intelligence and will, balancing the different alternatives aims at protecting the lives and livelihoods of Kogi people.

On the other hand, skeptical philosophers stress that the support of the majority does not imply the truthfulness of the statement. This truism is important as a basis for the growing discredit toward “consensus”that follows.

Governor Yahaya Bello’s efforts to reject the broad consensus of the Covid-19 virus existing in Kogi state has seemingly proved abortive as a result of pressure from the federal government and some elements in the state.

Kogi state had activated a rapid response team since 2017 to curb any epidemic suspected to occur like the Ebola and Lasa fever which had so far performed to the commendation of the national and international health organizations.

This team has also been committed to ensuring that the dreaded Covid-19 virus do not enter the state but has been under serious pressure to announce fictitious victims of the Covid-19 virus with some people accusing Bello’s administration of taking an unpatriotic and disruptive stance at a time of national health crisis on the lame notion that all the states surrounding Kogi already have COVID-19.

Earlier Bello promised not to bat an eyelid to what he call “fraud “Kogi state will not give in to pressure to announce fictitious cases of COVID-19. We will only announce a real case of confirmed COVID-19 when it exists, and we advise our people to strictly follow the state government’s guidelines in the prevention of the disease, for as it stands, Kogi state is officially COVID-19 free!”

But just yesterday, Yahaya Bello, Governor of Kogi state ordered for the locked down of Kabba/Bunu local government area of the state, following the purported index cases of COVID-19 in the state as the CABLE online newspaper reported how Ahmad Ejibunu, chief imam of Kabba, and one of his aides tested positive for the disease.

This has once again reignite the controversy trailing the COVID-19 response in Kogi, a development that pitted state authorities against their federal counterparts.

Prior to the NCDC’s results of Wednesday, Kogi and Cross Rivers were the only states yet to confirm any case of the virus, a record widely disputed by health authorities and federal officials who believe governments in both states are discouraging tests for people with symptoms of COVID-19.

Authorities in Kogi and Cross Rivers believe there is a plot to compulsorily report COVID-19 cases in the states but medical experts and federal officials said the low number of test samples turned in from the states is making it difficult to ascertain if they are actually coronavirus-free.

Ejibunu, who was transferred to Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, from Kabba Specialist Hospital was eventually referred to the National Hospital, Abuja, where he was diagnosed with the disease.

Though the Kogi state government had however rejected the results, accusing the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) of perpetrating fraud, but because of the insensitivity of some people who are still yet to believe that Kogi state is Covid-19 free, Bello swung into action and ordered for a 14 day total lockdown in the local government area of the suspected victim, Kabba/Bunu local government area of the state as a proactive measures to contain the virus from spreading if at all it exist.
